What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a registered health profession that focuses on the assessment, management, and care of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those affecting the spine. Chiropractors use a range of hands-on techniques, including spinal adjustments, joint mobilisation, soft tissue therapy, and rehabilitative exercises, to support musculoskeletal function and mobility

Understanding the Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is the framework of the body (your skeleton), made up of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissues. These structures work together to support movement, posture, and daily activities. The nervous system plays a key role in coordinating and controlling musculoskeletal function.

What do chiropractors look for in the musculoskeletal system?

Chiropractors assess movement patterns, joint mobility, muscle tone, and other factors that may indicate musculoskeletal dysfunction. They use clinical reasoning and evidence-informed approaches to develop individualised care plans based on each patient’s needs.

What is the Nervous System?

The nervous system is a complex communication network that regulates and coordinates body functions. It plays a key role in movement, memory, sensation, speech, vision, breathing, digestion, and heart function. By transmitting signals between the brain and body, the nervous system helps maintain overall health and function.

The Structure of the Nervous System

The nervous system is made up of two main parts:
• The Central Nervous System (CNS): This includes the brain and spinal cord, which process and relay information throughout the body.
• The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): This consists of nerves that extend from the spinal cord to the muscles, joints, skin, and organs, carrying messages between the body and brain.

How the Nervous System relates to Chiropractic Care

The nervous system and musculoskeletal system work together to support movement and function. The body transmits signals through nerve pathways connecting the brain, spinal cord, muscles, joints, and organs. Chiropractors assess joint mobility, muscle tone, and movement patterns that may influence musculoskeletal function. Using hands-on techniques, chiropractic care focuses on supporting musculoskeletal health, which may assist with movement and overall function.

What are Chiropractic Adjustments?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a hands-on technique used to address joint restrictions and support musculoskeletal function. Chiropractors assess joint mobility and apply a controlled force to specific areas where movement may be restricted.

The manual chiropractic adjustment is a high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust that may produce a “popping” sound. This sound occurs when gas is released within the joint, similar to when you crack your knuckles. Adjustments are used to support joint mobility and movement patterns.

What chiropractic adjustments do we perform in our practice?

In our practice, we may use:

  • Diversified Technique – A hands-on method where manual adjustments are applied to joints in specific set-up positions
  • Drop-Piece Technique – A specialised table-assisted approach that assists with the manipulation.

What Else Happens in a Chiropractic Session Besides an Adjustment?

A session may include a combination of different approaches based on individual assessment and needs. Chiropractors are also trained to provide:

  • Soft tissue therapy (e.g., massage techniques)
  • Rehabilitative exercises
  • Nutritional and lifestyle guidance related to musculoskeletal health

What If I Don't Want A Manual Adjustment?

That’s absolutely fine! Chiropractic care includes a variety of techniques, and not all involve high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) adjustments.

What Does a Session Look Like Without Manual Adjustments?

For infants, children, older adults, or individuals who prefer a gentler approach, we use low-force techniques. These techniques aim to support joint mobility and musculoskeletal function in a way that is suited to individual needs.

Some of the techniques that may be used in our practice include:

• Craniosacral Therapy

• Flexion-Distraction

• Neuro Emotional Technique

• Professional Applied Kinesiology

• Retained Neonatal Reflexes (RNR) Techniques

• Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation

• NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT)

• Activator Adjusting Tool – This involves a small handheld instrument that delivers a controlled impulse to the joint, aiming to assist with mobility.

Kylie and Lisa will discuss your treatment options with you and tailor your care based on your preferences and clinical assessment.
